Anno 1503
£29.99 PC CD ROM
With the gentle strains of ‘Scarborough Fair’ (amongst others) medievally strumming away in the background and the cries of “Ahoy you salty dogs” called out by the captain of your sea vessel, the first steps in global domination are taken. ANNO 1503 takes you back to the days of wooden ships, mighty discoveries and the interaction with strange people and new cultures in a brave new world. It’s a real time strategy, epic in size and complexity, where everything depends upon your ability to coordinate and manage. It also assumes that players will have had some experience with the genre and pitches its campaigns and single continuous mission scenarios at a level only usually reached towards the end of many similar titles. In other words… it’s not easy…!

The three tutorials are fairly comprehensive and impart knowledge on how to plan and organise your towns, load and transport goods, send out your scouts, set up regular trade routes and handle the basics of combat. Even so, there’s still a lot to learn and quite a bit to figure out on your own. Even seasoned RTS veterans may find themselves struggling a little during the early stages.

Between the campaign and continuous game options the latter is the best way to learn the ropes. Without an ultimate goal to achieve you can simply play for as long as you like. There are also several scenarios to choose from that provide a full range of environments, peaceful or hostile inhabitants and a sedate or more chaotic style of gameplay to suit your own level of expertise. To aid matters, there is also a handy, almost encyclopaedic A to Z indexed help option that details all the different elements of the game and is invaluable when you get stuck.

Basically, the aim of the game is to set up and maintain a viable working community and all that that entails. Each building has its own service area and must be connected to other, relevant buildings via a road network. Build a warehouse and it needs to be stocked with commodities from outlying production and manufacturing premises such as a wood yard or hunting lodge. The warehouse will then supply a market, which in turn will sell the goods to your population.
