ANOTHER WAR takes the form of an RPG but instead of swords and sorcery the main character is dumped firmly into the dark times of the Second World War. Players choose their hero from one of three different classes:  Strongman, Thief or Intellectual and these carry their own set of stats that are boosted as players progress through the game. Each character also approaches problems from a unique angle – for example…

Right at the start of play the hero is captured by the Nazi’s and thrown into a cell. If you have chosen the Strongman option as your character he will simply force the cell door to escape. The thief, on the other hand, will search the cell for a tool to pick the door lock while the Intellectual strikes up a conversation with the guard and gets him to open the door.

These skills set the theme for the rest of the gameplay but each hero class has its downside as well as its up and it’s the players job to figure out the best way to approach each situation. Many useful items are provided to help your cause and these are found within the scenarios or available as trade items from other characters. In some cases, however, certain objects or weapons may not function correctly unless you have the correct skill stats to use them so another method of solving the puzzles has to be found.

This is all done in classic RPG mode. Interaction with on-screen characters, examining and collecting items or searching for clues is seen from the familiar isometric viewpoint and managed from a simple interface. There’s also plenty of combat to get to grips with but it’s not all doom and gloom. There are touches of humour throughout which provides a welcome bright side to an otherwise dark era and this, together with dynamic lighting, particle effects and sound, make ANOTHER WAR an interesting and enjoyable experience packed on to 4 CD’s.

The Game

In an attempt to come up with something different to the normal Role-Playing features of magic, fiction, quasi science fiction, and strange creatures, the setting of Another War is a possible first for the genre: that of W.W.II, possibly the darkest era in our history. Although using 1940 as the period, Another War can be compared with games such as 'Diablo' and 'Planescape Torment'. Instead of monsters, substitute Nazis; instead of swords and sorcery, substitute an MG42 and a Mauzer 98K; instead of the works of Tolkein or Steve Jackson, substitute 'Saving Private Ryan', 'The Dirty Dozen', and even 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'. Another War uses familiar RPG functions within a 20th Century environment: allocate points to build your character, carry equipment in your backpack (space permitting), and involve yourself in real-time combat.

The Story

Another War is a story about a mercenary and adventurer, living on his wits, who gets himself involved in a web of intrigue between world-powers whilst trying to save an old friend from a group of Nazis. The plot begins in a forgotten French village where the only signs of conflict are intermittent German patrols and Wehrmacht soldiers occupying the local bar. It ends in the hell of besieged Leningrad, where the hero discovers a secret project jointly funded and administered by both Russians and Germans. Although the premise is to save your friend, it doesn't follow that you only play as a single character: playing as a team is the only way to progress in Another War.

Features include:

50 locations across Europe.
30 weapons including a plethora of guns, grenades, mines, etc.
Real time action sequences.
Play as one of three characters: a thief, a spy, or a tough-guy.
Isometric engine with all new tools:
