New
from Strike Force Entertainment, BRITISH RAILWAYS: THE
EARLY YEARS 1948 - 1961 is a detailed insight into the
foundation years of British Railways. Starting in the
late 1940s as a result of the impact of World War Two,
the “Big Four” rail companies constantly battled
with the repair of tracks and engines not to mention the
demands made around the period of nationalisation of the
railways towards the early 1950s. 1955 brought the Modernisation
Plan for British Railways, swapping steam engines with
diesel and electric traction based engines, providing
a rail revolution in Britain.
Colin Divall, Head of the Institute of Railway Studies
at the National Railway Museum, takes us on a journey
through this tumultuous history in BRITISH RAILWAYS: THE
EARLY YEARS 1948 – 1961, supplemented with period
newsreels and interviews with railway men and historians.
The DVD also covers topics such as the formation of the
British Transport
Commission, the Western Region diesel hydraulics and the
first generation diesel electric locomotives. Engines
included are greats such as the A4 Pacific Class, the
standard Britannia class, the Deltic prototype and the
Blue Pullman.
