Around the year 2028 an artefact is discovered that boosts mental capabilities and taps into the unused portions of the brain. So powerful is this talent that, if used unwisely, it can send the person totally insane but Dr. Joan Aiken devised a serum to minimise the dangers and her first test subjects she called Cain and Able. Eventually, psionic powers were relatively commonplace but the un-enhanced section of the population grew to fear these ‘super beings’ that could hurl mental energy bolts from the tips of their fingers. Such was the outcry that a special body of psionic cops was formed (the DNPC) with Cain becoming one of their top agents. Abel, his foster brother, eventually turned to a life of crime but Cain continued to work towards a peaceful co-existence between psionics and normal humans. In AIKEN’S ARTIFACT, players take control of Cain (played by pop idol Ice-T) through more than 20 mission levels. Cain’s special psionic powers got him into trouble once and now he has an implanted aggression control chip that inhibits him from harming innocent bystanders. Even accidental damage to anyone non-aggressive results in Cain being ‘taken out’ so care has to be taken throughout all the missions. These begin at the Aiken Institute where Cain receives all his briefings and training and gameplay takes the form of a third person isometric 3D adventure. Control of your character is mouse driven and the selection of his weapons and psionic talents is made from an iconic menu at the foot of the screen. More talents become available throughout the game and there are 80 different ones altogether. These could be anything from the ability to read minds, producing magical barriers to reflect projectiles or conjuring a fiery inferno that damages everything in it path to immobilising enemies or healing powers. Most of these, as you would imagine, come complete with their own pyrotechnic light show and are quite pretty to see. Their effects, however, can be devastating to both the user and the victim and a careful eye must be trained on the health and sanity meters built into the toolbar. In fact the graphics in general are pretty good and there is plenty of interaction with other characters within the game who will react accordingly when you flash your DNPC badge or draw your gun. AIKEN’S ARTIFACT is a great game to play alone but it supports multiplayer options for up to 8. These include Deathmatch and Insanity modes and talents can be traded with other players over the Internet. CHEATS Press the enter key to activate the dialogue mode: Type MPJUICEME for 100% sanity, health and all essential items. Type MPTEDTHEHEAD to activate God mode. (Cain will not lose health points when attacked and will not lose his sanity when using Talents. However, he is still vulnerable to a falling death.) Type MPSHIPIT to unlock all single player levels. Press the ESC key to bring up the main menu and select New, Single Player then click Chapters to access all areas.
