Alice
In Wonderland |
||
With a rather unusual blend of real live
action and animated graphics Dorling Kindersley have recreated the magical world of ALICE
IN WONDERLAND and, also unusually, set it almost as a theatre production. This strange
combination actually works quite well and, in a way, provides players with a feeling of
watching a very well costumed pantomime while at the same time being involved in the
on-stage acting. It begins, as always, with Alice spotting a very late white
rabbit and following it down the rabbit hole. A plunge of 6,000 miles to the centre of the
earth may seem like a long way but Alice manages it in only a few seconds, ending up in a
magical world filled with equally magical and strange characters. The arrival lounge, as
it were, is the rabbits room of doors and its here that players get their
first taste (quite literally) of the shrinking potion that will enable Alice to enter the
miniature garden. In fact much of the gameplay is centred on whether Alice is
large, small or normal sized and players will need to master growing and shrinking in
order to get through the game. This is usually accomplished by eating something and an
encounter with the caterpillar introduces you to the mystery of mushrooms
! Eat one
type and youll shrink to the size of an ant and then have to escape real ants in
order to climb onto the mushroom to collect the caterpillars chrysalis eat
another type and youll have a neck like a giraffe, which is ideal when helping the
bird in the treetops to sort out her eggs. In all there are 10 magical worlds for Alice to find and explore
each one the domain of a famous Lewis Carroll creation and each containing puzzles
to solve or riddles to unravel. There are also some mini action games to enjoy which keeps
the gameplay varied and interesting. Each scenario change is accompanied by the drawing of theatrical
curtains rather like a scenery change on stage and as well as the white
rabbit, caterpillar, Queen of Hearts and, of course, the Mad Hatter youll have the
ever-grinning Cheshire Cat to offer help and advice if you get stuck. Designed especially for the 7 to 12 age group ALICE IN WONDERLAND offers lots of observational, logical and fun problems to solve and is available from many high street retailers such as Dixons, PC World and WH Smith. Price: £19.99 for PC CD ROM. |
