ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE is the best 3D action game I’ve seen for younger players in quite some time. Apart from the fact that it bears all the hallmarks of Disney it treats players as people with a mind of their own and doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to difficulty.

The gameplay follows the story of the movie and players start their quest to discover the lost empire in billionaire Whitmore’s mansion. He was a friend of Milo Thatch’s grandfather and, as Milo, players will learn from him how to survive this perilous journey. Once through this fairly straightforward tutorial session things begin to get a little tougher as you move on to the massive Ulysses submarine, which is under attack. The task is to get the ship out before it blows and it’s in this section that jumping, climbing and swimming skills come into play.

Players will also discover that there are certain tasks that Milo cannot do alone and he must switch places with other playable characters within the game. This is done via radios that are scattered throughout the levels – simply walk up to one, tune in to the character you need and a switch is made. You can also save games at these stations so it’s pretty useful to remember where they are. Explosives expert Vinny Santorini and mechanical whiz kid Audrey Ramirez can both be dialled up to help fix the sub’s guns or blast away at a blocked passage and later in the game other characters also become available.

As well as plenty of puzzles to solve players will embark on a scavenger hunt for all sorts of items. Atlantean symbols that unlock movie sequences, health items, clues in the form of journal pages, pieces of keys that can be combined and various crystals for increasing life or improving weapon effectiveness. Milo himself uses a pretty deadly boomerang to fend off attacking beetles, spiders and tigers but other characters have their own methods of defence. There are also quite a few vehicles that come into play in this all-round game aimed at players over 5.

Price: £19.99 for the Playstation.
